Paul boldly addressed issues threatening the church. He did not back down, nor let false teaching grow among believers. Sometimes, there are things in life that must be addressed. We cannot let things go in the false sense of "keeping the peace." Boldness and humility can happen simultaneously. The issue Paul addresses is one that still ripples today: many Christians aren't experiencing true freedom because they believe Christ's love for them is tied to something external they must do for approval. Paul defends the Gospel as an internal work of God's grace.
